TeamFight Tactics Guide - How to play TeamFight Tactics

TeamFight Tactics is one of the most popular auto-battler video games right now. However, since it is not like other traditional video games, it is a bit complicated, especially for beginners. If you are looking to get into TFT, you are at the right place. Here is our complete guide on how to play TeamFight Tactics.

TeamFight Tactics Core Gameplay

TeamFight Tactics is an auto-battler-style game, which means that the actual combat is automatic. In other video games like maybe Apex Legends or Dota 2, the player is the one controlling their character and using their abilities.

However, in TFT, the characters, or champions, are not controlled by the players. Instead, the players are in control of everything else, including the economy, deciding which champions get to go on the battlefield and the positioning of the champions.

The core gameplay of TFT revolves around a battle between champions from two players, one being you and the other being the opponent, on a square-shaped battlefield. You view the battlefield with a 2.5D top-down style perspective, similar to what you see in games like League of Legends.

Battling in TeamFight Tactics

This battle starts with both players being allowed to purchase champions. These champions get deployed onto the battlefield at locations defined by the players. As the round begins, your champions start auto-battling with your opponent's champions.

At the start of the first round, each player has 100 health points. As one round ends, each player will take some damage points equal to the number of the opponent's champions remaining on the battlefield. As more rounds end and one player's health drops to zero, the remaining player will get crowned the 1st place winner.

What Determines the Winning Champions in TeamFight Tactics

Several things determine which champions will win the battle. Their strength is the primary factor that determines the outcome of the fight. Along with that, the player has to combine specific champions so they can synergize and overpower the opponents.

You can also get access to powerful items that can increase your champions' odds of winning the fight. Another thing that matters a lot in TeamFight Tactics is positioning. Players must carefully place the champions on the battlefield to have a higher chance of winning the fight.

Round Types in TeamFight Tactics

As you compete with a player in TeamFight Tactics, you go through something called rounds. One full round is made up of three different types of rounds.

The most prevalent round type in a full round is the battle round, where you get to deploy your champions and battle with the opponent player's champions.

The second round type is the PVE round. In PVE rounds, you don't battle with another player. Instead, you battle with AI-controlled champions. These rounds give you several rewards, like items and gold, which you can use in later rounds.

The third round type is the Carousel round. In a Carousel round, you will see several champions with unique items going around in a clockwise circle. Both players can choose whichever champion they like.

A match in TeamFight tactics starts with a Carosoul round. After that, a full round starts. Each full round consists of three battle rounds, a Carosoul round, two battle rounds, and a PVE round.

Champions in TeamFight Tactics Explained

Champions are the main characters in TeamFight Tactics like Operators are in Rainbow Six Siege. Champions are categorized according to rarity, which also determines how powerful they are.

Champions in TFT also have a gold value, with the rarest Champions costing more gold than the common ones. This value ranges from one gold to five gold. The five gold champions are super rare. However, the probability of finding one increases as you level up in a match.

As a round starts, players are offered five champions inside a shop located in the bottom section of the screen. You can buy champions from this selection using your gold. However, if you don't like the options, you can spend two gold to refresh the selection.  You can also combine two same Champions to create a single, more powerful champion.

To buy a champion from the shop, click on them, and the gold will automatically get deducted from your balance. If you don't like a Champion, you can return them by dragging them down to the shop. Returning a Champion also gives you the gold back.

Champions in TFT have abilities or traits called Classes and Origins, with almost all Champions having two traits and some having three. During a match, you will see several synergies in the left section. To activate the synergies, you will need to deploy Champions with those traits, or else those synergies will stay dormant.

Items in TeamFight Tactics Explained

One of the most important gameplay elements in TeamFight Tactics is the Items. The Item system in TFT consists of Item components and complete Items. You can combine the Item components to create a complete Item.

Items in TFT have some powerful effects, with each Item improving the Champions. There are eight types of Core Items in TFT at the most basic level, including Sword, Bow, Rod, Tier, Vest, Cloak, Belt, and Gloves.

Tips For TeamFight Tactics

  • Champions will benefit more from specific Items. Choose Items carefully so they can be most effective with your Champions.

  • During Carosoul rounds, players often go for the Champions. Instead, decide based on the Items those Champions have and not the Champions themselves.

  • Don't save powerful Champions in the early rounds. Use the best Champions early on, which will help in later rounds.

  • Focus on your positioning. For example, Champions that can take a lot of damage must stay forward, and the heavy-hitting Champions must be behind so they can safely deal damage.

Final Thoughts

Now you know almost all the basics about TeamFight Tactics. However, you will never learn everything unless you keep trying out new things in the game and playing more. Focus on practicing as much as you can, and you will soon become a great TFT player.
