How To Test Ping In Fortnite

Fortnite was released back in 2017 as a free-to-play third-person shooter.  The primary game mode featured in Fortnite is battle royale. Battle royale is a high-stakes game mode with a technical winning probability of as low as 1%. When stakes are so high in a video game, it naturally starts getting more and more competitive. The product of this is a huge player base dedicated to improving their in-game performance and a massive Esports Scene for Fortnite.

Competitive Players and Ping

Needless to say, Fortnite has now become a super competitive game however, it is still played casually by many players. Competitive players generally care the most about 2 features of a video game, namely ping, and FPS. Here we will discuss all there is about testing your ping in Fortnite.

Ping and Fortnite Servers

It is no mystery for competitive gamers that ping should be as low as possible to have an enjoyable experience and have no limitations for in-game performance. If the ping is too high, it will cause stress-inducing issues to arise. The worst issues are "Lag" and "Rubberbanding" and can be a nightmare to deal with while playing Fortnite.

Several factors determine the value of your ping, but the main determining factor is the distance between your computer and the game server. Ping is just the time it takes for information to go from your computer to a game server then back to your computer. Since the speed of this information is limited, the only variable that we can change to lower the ping is distance. In other words, for a lower ping in Fortnite, the distance between your computer and the game server must be as low as possible.

One might ask how to manipulate the distance between a game server and the computer? Well, we can't. What we can do is play on the server that is nearest to us. Fortnite has servers located in many different regions of the world. These regions are:

  • Middle East

  • Asia

  • Europe

  • Brazil

  • North America, East

  • North America, West

  • Oceania

Of these regions, you should select the one that is closest to your country. For example, if you live in Canada, it's better if you play on the North American servers, or if you live in Singapore, you should play on the Asian Servers.

How to Select Region in Fortnite

Here is how to select the server region on which you want to play Fortnite. Firstly you need to open the main menu by clicking on the icon that looks like three horizontal lines. Next, click on the settings icon shaped like a sprocket or a gear, now make your way to the "MATCHMAKING REGION" section and select one of the regions. You can also let the game decide for you by setting this to "AUTO" which will automatically select start matchmaking on the region with the lowest ping for you.

How to Show Ping in Fortnite

Competitive players usually prefer that they have a continuous live ping display on some part of their screen. This can easily be done within the Fortnite settings. Firstly you need to make your way into the main menu by clicking the icon shaped like three horizontal lines. Secondly, you need to select the "Game UI" tab, which can be done by clicking on the icon that is located on the right of the gear-shaped icon. Once in the "Game UI" tab scroll down to the "HUD OPTIONS" section and set the "NET DEBUG STATS" to "ON". Click on apply and you are done. Now you can see ping and other network stats on the top left corner of your screen.

In the top left section of the network performance information, you can see the ping. The numbers with the unit "KB/s" represent the amount of information received from or sent to the server per second. The numbers with the unit "Packets/s" represent the number of packets received or sent per second. The last row of numbers represents the percentage of packets that are lost, either while receiving or while sending. The left column represents the download or received information while the right column represents the upload or sent information.
