How to Fix Lag in New World

A new MMORPG game just came out on the 28th of September, 2021, called New World. Developed by Amazon Games Orange County, New World is only available on PC for Microsoft Windows.

At first glance, the game seems promising and has a great vibe to it. However, lots of players have started to complain about the gameplay issues in New World. Most of these issues revolve around lag.

New World Lag

Internet forums are piling up with complaints from players stating that they are experiencing high ping and tons of lag in "New World". If you are facing lag in New World as well, do not worry as here we will discuss all there is about New World Lag.

What is New World Lag

If you are a gamer that plays online multiplayer games, you are probably familiar with the term "lag" and, you also most likely know how frustrating it is to deal with. People who are new to online gaming and are trying out the game New World for the first time, might not know what lag is and whether they are experiencing it or not.

In simple terms, lag is the time delay between a gamers input and the appropriate change on their screen. This delay has to be noticeable and cause a degradation in the gaming experience for it to be categorized as lag. This is because lag is always present. If things are working how they should, you will not notice any lag.

Let's say you are playing New World and, you come across an enemy. You get closer and press the appropriate button to land a strike with your weapon on the enemy. However, you see that it takes about a second or two for the enemy to react to your strike. This noticeable delay is called lag.

What Causes New World Lag

Lag is a term given to a broad spectrum of problems. Lag includes problems such as input lag, rubberbanding, high ping, etc. Hence, it is not always clear what is causing the lag and, it takes time to pinpoint the exact issue. What is clear, however, is that lag is very frustrating and can sometimes make a game unplayable.

Lag in New World can be caused by both network-related issues and hardware-related issues. If the issue is hardware-related you will experience a lag in the form of input lag, framerate drops, and in some severe cases, frequent game crashes. If the issue is network related you will experience a lag in the form of rubberbanding and high ping. Both network lag and hardware lag are discussed below.

Hardware Lag

As we have already discussed, lag in New World can arise either due to network-related issues or hardware-related issues. If the lag arises due to issues related to the hardware then we consider it to be hardware lag.

new world requirements

The most common type of hardware lag is input lag. Input lag has nothing to do with your internet connection or the video game server that you are connected to. Rather, input lag almost always arises due to two main reasons. The first reason is that there may be an issue with the hardware or software of your computer that may be restricting some of the performance of your computer. This reduces the framerate which then results in input lag. Even if there is no issue with your computer, if you are getting a framerate below 60fps then you may experience some input lag. The input lag gets even more severe once your framerate starts dipping below 30fps.

The second reason that may cause input has nothing to do with the framerate. There may be an issue with either the game files of any other part of the softwares of our computer. While these issues may reduce the framerate, the drop in framerate will not directly cause input lag. Tons of players have reported that the game feels laggy despite having a framerate of above 100fps.

Network Lag

If you are experiencing lag in New World due to issues related to the network, then this type of lag is called network lag. While hardware-related lag is relatively easy to diagnose and fix, network lag can sometimes get quite complicated. This is because there is a plethora of potential issues that may exist in any part of your network that result in lag. However, the most common issues that may cause gamers to experience network lag in New World are explained below.

  • High Ping: Whenever the ping gets higher than the acceptable range for gaming, players will start to experience lag. This is because the delay of the data that is being transmitted between your computer and the game server gets larger and larger.

  • Ping Spiking: Ping spiking means that your ping is constantly jumping from really low values to extremely high values like 300ms or even 900ms. If your ping is constantly spiking then you will start to experience one of the worst forms of lag which is rubberbanding. Rubberbanding causes the game to become practically unplayable.

  • Bandwidth Limitations: Bandwidth limitations can arise due to all sorts of reasons. The common reasons include, too much load from other users, background applications using up all the bandwidth, and not enough bandwidth to begin with. A restricted bandwidth will also induce lag.

  • Unstable Connection: An unstable connection will cause lag in New World and in some severe cases it may even cause rubberbanding and game freezes.

New World Lag – Hardware Fixes

As established, lag can arise due to both network-related issues and hardware-related issues. In the same way, the potential fixes for lag are also either network-related or hardware-related. It is better to apply hardware-related fixes first because they are very easy and simple to apply.

System Requirements

If your computer does not meet the recommended system requirements for New World, then you will experience low framerate and lag. We recommend upgrading your system to at least these requirements for a Lag-free gaming experience. Here are the recommended system requirements for New World:

  • Operating System: Windows 10 64-bit

  • CPU: Core i7-2600k or Better (Intel) / Ryzen 5 1400 or Better (AMD)

  • RAM: 16 GB or More

  • GPU: GeForce GTX 970 or Better (NVIDIA) / Radeon R9 390X or Better (AMD)

  • DirectX: Version 12

  • Network: Broadband Internet Connection

  • Storage: 50GB Available Space

Video Settings

If you are experiencing lag while meeting the recommended system requirements for New World, you might be playing on a higher graphics preset than what your system can handle. Having a gaming computer that meets the system requirements of a game does not automatically mean that you can run the game on ultra-settings or a 4k resolution. The system requirements are formulated based on the notion that players will be running the game on 1080p and moderate graphics settings.

To resolve any lag that you are experiencing in New World due to high graphics settings, try lowering a few settings and test whether the lag issue is resolved or not. Here are the main settings that you can play around with to reduce some of the lag.

New world settings

Resolution

If you are playing New World on a computer that only meets the system requirements or maybe even exceeds them by a small margin you should always make sure that you are not playing on a resolution above 1080p. This is because, as we have already mentioned, the system requirements are formulated based on the notion that players will run the game on 1080p.

If you do not meet the system requirements for New World or are having trouble with lag at 1080p resolution, then you can try lowering it to 720p. This may help free up some of the resources of your computer. These resources could then be allocated to the framerate. However, if 720p is too much for you, then you can try using the render resolution slider. Lower the render resolution to about 90 or 85 percent and see if you get rid of the lag.

Graphics

Running on ultra-graphics is not recommended at all for gamers who care about the framerate. If your computer does not meet the system requirements for New World, then even high settings may not be an option. The good thing is that the game looks beautiful even on medium settings.

If you are running the game on ultra-settings then make sure to turn them down to at least high. This way your computer will free up some of the resources and allocate them to the framerate. Going from ultra to high settings won't make that much of a difference in how the game looks, but it will certainly make a huge difference in the framerate.

V-Sync

When it comes to issues that may be causing your game to lag, V-Sync is one of the most common ones. When it comes to what kind of lag V-Sync causes, it is input lag. V-Sync is basically a screen tearing reduction technology that reduces all kinds of screen tearing. It also works very well, with almost zero instances of screen tearing present while playing video games.

The problem with V-Sync is that in the process of reducing screen tearing, V-Sync limits the framerate to the refresh rate of your monitor. This means that if you are playing New World on a monitor that has a refresh rate of 60Hz and you have V-Sync turned on, you will not achieve a framerate of over 60 FPS. Along with this, V-Sync also induces tons of input lag that can easily be noticed while playing games. Hence, it is best that you try turning V-Sync off and see if it reduces the input lag that you are experiencing.

Background Applications

Sometimes it is not the graphical settings or your hardware that is the problem. Lag might arise due to unnecessary applications that are running in the background while you are gaming. These applications induce a lot of stress on your computer. If your computer just meets the system requirements for New World, it will not be able to handle both the game and these applications. Hence we recommend you close all unnecessary applications. You can still use Discord or TeamSpeak.

New World Lag – Network Fixes

Once you are done applying all the hardware-related fixes, you can move on to the network-related fixes. However, the network-related fixes are not as simple as buying better hardware or closing applications. Here are some of the network fixes you can try.

  • Switching to a Wired Connection: If you ask a veteran gamer what type of connection is better, wireless or wired, the answer will always be a wired connection. This is because data flowing through a wireless connection has to deal with walls, furniture, and people, which causes a degradation in the quality. This can cause lag and, we recommend that you switch to a wired connection to reduce New World lag.

  • Gaming Router: If you can’t switch to a wired connection, you should consider buying a gaming router. A gaming router will help in reducing all the network-related issues. Hence, it will lower the lag you are experiencing.

  • Background Downloads and Updates: If you are playing an online multiplayer game while trying to download large files in the background then you will experience lag because of the unnecessary load placed on your bandwidth. You should pause all downloads and make sure that no updates are being downloaded while gaming.

  • ISP / Bandwidth Upgrade: Sometimes changing your ISP to a reputable one may help with lag. You can also try upgrading your bandwidth speed. However, bandwidth speed rarely causes lag unless it is very slow.
