Ping vs. Latency vs. Lag: Know the Difference

These three terms are often used interchangeably by gamers, but they each have a specific meaning:

Ping

Ping is a measurement of how long it takes for your device to send a small packet of data to a game server and receive a response, usually measured in milliseconds (ms). When people say “my ping is 30,” they mean it takes 30 ms for data to make that round trip. Lower ping means faster, more responsive gameplay.

Latency

Latency refers to the delay in communication between the game's server and your device. While many gamers use 'ping' and 'latency' interchangeably, latency also refers to delays within your hardware and local network. Basically, Ping is used to measure Latency.

Lag

Lag is the experience of delay or sluggishness while playing a game. It’s the symptom you feel when your actions take too long to register. Lag can be caused by high ping or latency, but it can also originate from other sources, such as low frame rates (FPS lag), server problems, or hardware issues.

Summary

Ping and latency both describe the speed of your network connection, with ping being the actual measurement of the speed.

Lag is the noticeable delay or stutter you experience, which can be caused by high ping, low FPS, or server issues.

Understanding these differences helps you troubleshoot problems and communicate more clearly about your gaming experience
