Ping is used to determine the length of time for your computer to receive the data it requested from the game servers. Having a high ping means that it takes a while for your computer to receive the data, making an MMO game undesirable to play. On the other hand, a low ping means a shorter waiting time and a smoother gameplay.

 

Ping is an internet utility that is used to determine how long it takes for a message to return back to the sender. If you have a low ping, it means that the data has traveled fast and that is very desirable. A high ping is very undesirable especially for MMO gamers. This means that your computer has to wait before it can process the data and deliver it to your screen. This results to a laggy gameplay and causes headaches and migraine especially when playing online games. It's just like in real life, we all hate waiting.

There are a lot of factors that affect ping. These include:

• Server geography - The physical distance between your computer and a game server affects how long the data will reach the other end of the line. If you live near a game a server, then you are very lucky!

• Internet Service Provider (ISP) - Yup, your ISP also affects how high or how low your ping is. Different ISPs have different protocols and different routes. One may have too many intermediate devices (or hops) and may cause your ping to be higher and others may have fewer.

• Network connection speed - The speed of your network connection affects the rate of data transfer between the devices. The faster your network connection speed and the lower your ping is, the better.

Lag and slow online connections are a thing of the past for FPS games on PC

Lag is one of the most common problems MMO gamers experience. It makes the game undesirable to play and can cause headaches to each and every gamer.

There are two types of lag: hardware-related lag and network-related lag. Hardware related lag is caused, obviously, by your hardware's performance. This means that your system is not capable of running the game on its full settings. On the other hand, network-related lag depends on the speed of data transfer from your computer to the game server. The faster the data transfer is, the smoother the gameplay. That's what Ellwood Bartlett did several years after he won the Mega Millions lottery back in 2007. His winnings amount to a total of $27 million after taxes. After several years, he decided that he wants his own MMO.

Bartlett, a self-confessed "ideas man"  is a gamer and most of the ideas for his planned MMO are on the wishlist of most gamers. Some of Bartlett's ideas include:

• game servers are their own worlds and are different from each other
• avatars can be made with different race body parts
• using PayPal and Amazon for paying
• one-on-one PvP a la Street Fighter (arcade style)
• no level cap
• land purchases where you can create your own "town"
• mounts from level 1 and flying mounts

Though the list typically depict what most gamers wish, these things are a bit hard to implement and will probably take a long time and loads of money. In this case, money won't be a problem so maybe we'll just have to sit out and wait.

Star Wars: The Old Republic, the fastest growing MMORPG, has reportedly settled at 1.7 million subscribers which means that at least 1.7 million people are paying $15 to play SWTOR. 

Star Wars: The Old Republic is an MMORPG derived from the very popular Star Wars universe. SWTOR allows player to live as one of the members of the Galactic Republic or the Sith Empire. It has been dubbed as the fastest growing MMO in history and has proven itself  with 1.7 million users in just a couple of months.  

In the latest reports, Electronic Arts CEO John Riccitello announced that SWTOR subscription numbers have stabilized at 1.7 million. Though nothing has changed since the last reported number of users, most users (if not all) have already used up the 30-day free trial period which means that each and every one is paying $15 to play SWTOR.

Riccitello also stated that to keep players interested and to further increase the number of subscribers, SWTOR will be adding new content every quarter and will be releasing feature upgrades and expansion contents. This sounds like BioWare and SWTOR will be having a great year and will be force to reckon with in the coming years.

With the upcoming release of Game Update 1.2, SWTOR continues to create gradual changes and improvements to the game. This time, the weekly patch 1.1.5 will bring in some economic changes to the galaxy. 

The changes implemented in patch 1.1.5 creates the groundwork for further improvements that we may see in Game Update 1.2. Patch 1.1.5, which is now currently in the Public Test Servers, implements a number of changes specially in the economy of the game. Rumors and stories are published on news wires which gives us a bit of an idea on how things will look like. These rumors mostly talk about changes in the transportation sector and also discoveries on color crystals.

Rumors say that production of speeder models "Sovereign", "Prince", "Baron", "Commander" from speeder manufacturer Korrealis and the "Prime" model from Tirsa Industrial Consortium will be ceased and that vendors are advised to clear out their stocks of the said models. These events resulted to very huge discounts on the said speeder models.

Other news include the passing of regulations that will adjust and lower the cost of Tier I and Tier II speeder licenses. However, cost Tier III licenses will be increased. This news most likely means that the cost of Tier I and Tier II vehicle piloting skills will be reduced and Tier III cost will be increased.

There are also news on breakthrough discoveries on mass productions of color crystal which can only mean that the light side and/or dark side requirements on color crystals will be removed.
